Overview of Order Picking in a warehouse

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Order picking is usually the most demanding process of a warehouse management system. Of the transactions involved in distribution and fulfillment, outbound transactions are mostly greater and labour intensive than inbound ones.  Therefore the outbound transactions require a larger portion of the total labour budget for the warehouse.  Also related to order picking process is customer satisfaction which increases the importance of this area.  The speed and accuracy of processing order is an extremely important part of business.

The order picking process can be achieved by different methods

To determine the best order picking method for your company should be based on the number of transactions, the number of picks for each order, quantity of items for each pick, number of orders, product being handled, number of SKUs, number of picks for each SKU.  And other factors as well, such as, private labeling, and whether you are picking pieces, cases, or pallets.  Often, all picking methods may be required to deal with a wide variety of orders and products.

To measure productivity, you must rely on the order pick rate. Piece pick operations usually measure the pick rate in terms of line items picked per hour while case pick operations will probably measure in cases per hour and line items per hour. When concerning pallet pick operations it is actually best to look at the number of total pallets processed per hour. Because the amount of time spent physically removing the actual product from a location is usually fixed without regard to the picking method used, productivity gains can be found by reducing the time spent on travel. Another aspect of time which must be monitored for an efficient operation is cycle time.

Accuracy is the most important objective regardless of your operation. All decisions that you make in setting up your warehouse operation will have an impact on accuracy. The numbering scheme for the products, the label design for the products, the packaging of the products will all have an impact. In addition, the design of the picking documents, the location numbering, storage equipment, warehouse lighting, and the picking method you choose will also have an impact on accuracy. There are several technologies that help improve picking accuracy. Some of them include counting scales, pick-to-light systems, and bar code scanning. Besides designing an efficient order picking operation, other important factors for accuracy include accuracy tracking, employee training and employee accountability.

What To Expect From Your Job Interview

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Knowing what to expect can mean the difference between performing well and making a fool of yourself. If you know what to expect you can better prepare yourself for the challenging questions and scenarios that may be posed.

Generally, when you begin and interview there is a period of introduction. Once those have been completed, you may be offered the opportunity to speak about yourself. You should try to keep this relevant to the current job offer. Although your personal life maybe of great interest, the time for an interview is limited so best stick to what they need to know and will want to hear.

You may be asked to demonstrate your current knowledge of the company. You may be asked this directly or in the form of a question such as. Why would you like to work for us? Prepare yourself by doing some research about the company. This shows the employer that you have a genuine interest in working for them and are not afraid of doing some research.

Nearly every interview asks that dreaded question, what are your weaknesses? The worst
answer that you can give is none at all. Everyone has weaknesses so this answer will not
impress. This question is more a test of your answering skills than anything. Speak about how you deal with your weaknesses. I make lists of things to do to make sure I remember everything or I use spell check to make sure everything is correct. This answers show your weaknesses and how you cope.

You will also likely get the opportunity to speak about your strengths. Although you may have many, keep these relevant to the job on offer. Again, interview time is limited and you don’t want to waste opportunities.

To get that job offer, you need to have a successful interview. Employers rarely hire the person on experience and qualifications alone. Most of the time it is the candidate that gives the best interview. By knowing how to present yourself in the best possible way, you can guarantee yourself success.

Preparing yourself ahead of time and knowing what to expect can make a great difference in
how well you perform in an interview. By being able to handle yourself well, you’ll be able to
make that important first impression.
